Description: | Hallelujah/Alleluia literally means “Praise Yah”, short for the Hebrew name of Israel’s God and the God of Christian belief. It is a word that dominates the biblical Psalms and also Christian liturgy. But for believers and non-believers alike, the response of praise has been expressed musically for thousands of years. Leonard Cohen wrote about his famous Hallelujah, which shot to prominence through the movie Shrek: “When one looks at the world, there's only one thing to say, and it's hallelujah”. Darwin Chorale has brought together songs that use this ancient/modern word from a variety of musical styles. From one of the most famous Baroque composer’s most famous works, Handel’s Messiah, we have the most famous Hallelujah Chorus. We have Ed Sheeran’s 2017 sad and soulful tribute to his grandmother, Supermarket Flowers. In between is a whole range of classical, pop, world music, gospel and more. Join in the joy, exultation and celebration as the Chorale brings to you "Hallelujah". |
